Shoujo manga classics & Windy Tales

I’m making my way through all sorts of classics, both movies and shoujo manga. It’s especially interesting with the latter because even though there are quite a few titles that can already be considered classics, there isn’t a real canon of shoujo manga yet because it’s still a relatively young genre and you can either rely on recommendations by other (older?) readers or check the release lists of various publishers for their bunko editions and other re-editions because they mostly contain older popular titles. But I always feel like I might be missing out on some really precious gems because I don’t trust the publishing companies; they probably just re-publish stuff that was commercially successful at the time it was first published, but that’s not necessarily what I’m looking for…)

Escapism II – new anime: Fuujin Monogatari (Windy Tales). Do not feel put off by the admittedly very werid, minimalistic designs! Once you’ve actually started watching this series, it’ll become part of its great great charm anyway. The story is so wonderfully magical and dreamy, it’s almost like an artsy Ghibli movie ♥

Make things quick!!! (Or not.)

Anime marathon I: Arjuna 1-12 on TV this past weekend. (No ep. 13 ;_;) This title hasn’t lost any of its quality. I’m still loving it to bits and pieces.

Anime marathon II: Hagaren! I was stuck somewhere between 16 and 19 for weeks and I managed to catch up until episode 32 (the most recent one) until earlier today. Go me! I thought the beginning of the second season was a bit of a let-down but it’s getting so much better again. Love this show!

Tried watching Gantz. The first episode was quite interesting but from then on it turned into the typical shounen (seinen?) junk show. Gory, vulgar, dumb, obscene :(

Monster based on the manga by Urasawa Naoki, on the other hand, is a great suspense mystery series. It took me a while to start watching this but so far I’m glad I didn’t ignore this show because I’m highly enjoying it.

I’m still watching Mujin Wakusei Survive (Uninhabitated Planet Survive).

Madlax is getting better and better too. It bears resemblances to Noir but then I again, I only saw the first 2 episodes of that series so I don’t mind at all ^^; Just like in .hack, Kajiura Yuki’s BGM varies from wonderful to absolutely annoying. And for the ultimate audio stimulation, Madlax 5 featured Irino Miyu’s voice acting godliness *raburabu*

Tweeny Witches

I managed to watch the first episode of Mahou Shoujotai Arusu (Tweeny Witches) by Studio 4°C today though! It was really short (about 9 minutes) and unsubbed but I highly enjoyed it. Studio 4°C also did about half of the short films on the Animatrix DVD and I liked theirs a lot more than most of the other shorts. Tweeny Witches is a lot darker and weirder than its title might suggest. I hope there’ll be some fansubs for it available soon…!
