April. Start of semester. Old new friends who infect me with the Heroes virus. Encouraged by a friend who tells me she’s been through pretty much the same psycho flatmate crap and she only felt better after she’d moved out again, I decide to do the same and start looking for an apartment for myself here in Prenzelberg (because high rents or not, I couldn’t live anywhere else anymore). I buy a white MacBook.
May. Bloc Party live @ Columbiahalle on May 4. A slap in the face due to its lack of passion and connection with the crowd. A very sobering experience which, adding to the very disappointing second album, makes me care even less for the band. No Japanese literature or culture classes this semester, but one Industrial Organisation in Japan course which I feign interest for so as not to die from boredom. The only interesting class turns out to be the one on Korean culture. My mother visits me in Berlin and we almost manage to go to the Jewish Museum. Almost. The ethernet port of my MacBook dies.
June. Serious apartment hunting continues. They’re all quite expensive and there certainly isn’t a lack of available ones, there are just way too many people interested in them. Damn you, oh so charming Prenzelberg. Desperation and stress level at a record high.
July. After much persistence and struggling, I find a two-bedroom apartment which is expensive but costs still less than most of the other (smaller) apartments I’ve seen over the past couple of weeks. On July 31 I finally move into it with the help of friends. Semester finals all go well. Start of 5-week XHTML summer class.
August. XHTML course continues, refreshes some old knowledge and provides some new insights, especially in the CSS department. Much fun is had but the downside is that I have to get up at 6.30 in the morning every day and feel more dead than alive most of the time.
Now that the course itself is over and I only have to finish the final project, I must admit that it reinstated that old creative versus academic profession conflict in me. But after much consideration, I’m convinced I chose the right path because there can be so much creativity in academic research after all.
September will be spent writing the papers and on the 30th I shall have a reunion with one of my favorite bands, The Decemberists ♥
