Girly stuff and Cat Street

One of my little cousins has been staying with us since last week. We get along so well because she’s more like a sister to me since she spent a lot of her early childhood here with my family. So the past few days we did a lot of fun stuff together.
For example, last week we saw Spider-Man 2. (Yay, I finally found someone I could drag into it :)) Usually, I’m not into that blockbuster type of movie but since I enjoyed the first movie quite a bit, I had to see the second one too. And well yes, pretty much like everyone else, I liked this one even better than the first. The action sequences were amazing, there was an incredible depth to the main characters (considering what kind of movie this is), the cinematography was pretty good too and the quiet moments were just… lovely. My favourite new movie of the summer so far.

Yesterday we went shopping. Hardcore shopping. My feet are still aching. She dragged me into all sorts of stores I usually never set a foot into but surprisingly enough I found a really cute top at H&M and lots of cute accessories.
Today we bought so many teen-girl mags, it wasn’t even funny ^^; But they all had this cool free stuff coming with them like really cute bags and bracelets etc.
As far as the actual printed contents of those magazines are concerned, I’m actually convinced those magazines help lower the IQ of young girls. I think I stopped reading them when I was 12 because they were so boring and were just like gigantic catalogues luring girls into buying all sorts of clothes and make-up combined with horrible reports on raped girls, animal testings and similar things. I really love fashion mags but those kind of teenage girl mags will be the death of modern civilisation. Or something like that. …But at least they have fun extras now -_-;;
(Speaking of cool extras: I got two pairs of ultra-funky socks with the latest issue of Cutie (Japanese fashion magazine WITHOUT horrible stories about girls who got raped :)).

I also got my copy of the August issue of Betsuma. Kamio Youko’s new series called Cat Street started in this issue. I’m not into Hana yori dango at all so I wasn’t really psyched when they announced Kamio’s new manga would be running in Betsuma. But Cat Street isn’t that bad, actually. In fact, I quite liked the first installment.
Keito, the heroine, is really mysterious at first because she doesn’t say a word and you only see people mentioning rumours about her whenever she appears. But the first chapter also revealed a lot of her past already. Her parents made her a child star who appeared in all sorts of commercials. But all she wanted was being a normal school girl and having friends like everyone else.
The story is pretty emotional in a non-kitschy way. You really feel Keito’s loneliness and understand her desperateness to become friends with the girl she’s sharing her role with in the musical. The girl she taught how to dance and act on stage. The girl who eventually got better than Keito, betrayed their friendship and put an end to Keito’s career.
The end of the chapter set up the storyline for what is to come in the series. Looks like Keito will finally be able to be a normal (? NOT!)  schoolgirl. Can’t wait for the second installment!

I’ve been here before…

:) Looks like July isn’t exactly the best month to be online a lot and be a good blogger. Oh well. I’ve been working a lot, panicking, going out till early in the morning, sun-bathing, reading really good books, watching  great movies… all those good (and not so good) things.

Somewhere in-between all of that, I got a Third Stage order including lots and lots of great CDs. I was really surprised about Modern-garde, Merry’s new album!
I think I went through some sort of Merry-low last winter, I can’t believe I only listened to the first few seconds of Japanese Modernist back when I got the single – I missed the awesome chorus! I’m such an idiot :(
So Modern-garde gave me back that fuzzy Merry-love feeling -_-; I think during the first four days after I got the CD, my whole life was exclusively dedicated to listening it again and again. Then after I got off that first-impression high, I romanized it in a few hours and also started translating a few songs because Gara’s lyrics really grabbed me this time! He’s always been a brilliant writer but this time he’s topped everything he’s ever written before!

The Modern-garde and singles romanizations and some of the translations are now up at the all-new Black Sheep!

I revamped the site completely and I’m definitely glad I’ve finally finished it. (I was so busy I only spent like 30 minutes a day on the computer so my progress was really really slow.) But anyway, enjoy all the new (and old) things on the site :)

In addition to my previous entry, I’ll have to say that I become more and more accepting of film versions of books I like the more often I watch them. It’s like I let go of my expectations and pieces of ‘the movie in my head’ with every additional time I see the respective film. So here’s hoping I’ll eventually hope PoA when it comes out on DVD and I’ll be able to watch it a few more times.
(And hell yes, I so excited about the 6th book and all the speculations that come with it now that its title has been revealed!!)

Books, yes. I’d praise Murakami Ryu’s In the Miso Soup for all its brilliance in one lengthy review but, alas, I’m simply too tired to write anything that’d do justice to the book’s aforementioned brilliance. If you couldn’t guess by now, it’s a brilliant book I can recommend to just about everyone into modern Japanese literature. Absolutely. Brilliant. ;)

I got a Gmail account the other day, even if I didn’t really need yet another mail account. The 1000 MB storage were kind of tempting though. So now I’m subscribed to about a million MLs I’m only semi-interested in.
Personal mail still goes to the usual address because Gmail is too creepy, after all. If your not afraid of the evil that is Google, send your electronic letters to coinlockerbaby at gmail dot com.

Life is good ♥
